Early in your planning, keep these five simple points in mind:

  1. Ease of Initial Use: Text messaging has been proven over and over again as the preferred method of communication to a new user. Asynchronous texting puts the cadence and control of communication in the user’s hands. It is cheap and convenient and will help develop the relationship on the user’s terms so you can move to more personalized options.
  2. Access: As the product matures, lean towards common consumer platforms to ensure you are casting the broadest net for those with the most modest of incomes (Zoom, Skype, Duo, etc.). Resources that do not leverage a mobile platform completely miss the boat. It is estimated that up to 62% of the homeless within a population have access to a mobile phone.
  3. Personalization: With the explosion of AI across every major digital platform, a company’s desire to gather information RIGHT NOW can overwhelm a new user. Studies show that a tailored, in- person interaction is more appealing to the seasoned wellness program end-user. In the age of Covid-19, this proves to be quite a challenge, so plan for sustained effectiveness using Texts, AI, Video chats, and Phone calls, in that order.
  4. Price Point: Free is King to the SDoH consumer marketplace. Leverage grants, sponsorships, and outreach programs for seed money in the development and roll-out. There is money to be made through SDoH, but not at the front end. Keep it cheap to assist in market coverage, and ensure the hardware required is low-end, and still available. Finally, make it SHAREABLE with easy linking, and consider the adoption of end-user teams that work together to access needed resources.
  5. Consistency: Now is no time to complicate resource access with un-necessary visual updates or UX reconfigurations. Keep it simple, and keep it running. Once live, you should only redesign UX should to eliminate confusion, or broaden market capture. Keeping the clicks low and the design clean will be refreshing enough to get word of mouth traction. In this exciting time of mobile computing, keeping those in need healthy and fed is easier than ever. Using digital platforms to supplement in-person outreach is the evolutionally step that should have happened 15 years prior to Covid-19.
